YouTube Expands ‘Send to TV’ and Other Trends at CES

The 2013 Consumer Electronics Show is only a few days away and that means we’ll soon get a sneak peak at future of technology. There are rumors about 110 inch screens and new shapes for TVs. Dozens of new smartphones will be revealed, maybe even one with a screen you can bend! So cool – but why?

YouTube says they’ll be expanding their Send to TV option. I’m I the only person who didn’t know they had this?

To use the system right now, you need an Android phone and a Google TV. You navigate to the video you want to watch then click the TV button on the app. Zap, the video appears on your TV. You can then use your mobile phone as a remote control to pause, go forward and back, etc. You can also create a queue so the next video will begin playing on your TV as soon as the other one stops. Nifty.

YouTube says that they’ll be announcing more Mobile / TV parings at CES including partnerships with Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Toshiba, Vizio, Western Digital and others.

Using your mobile phone as a remote control is one of the hottest trends of the new year. Several cable companies offer apps that allow you to set your DVR from your phone but it doesn’t stop there. More and more, tablets and phones will become the control center for the whole household. We’ll use it to turn lights on and off, arm the security system, get security alerts when we’re away from home, cool the house before you get there and you can probably find a way to start your coffee maker from the road.

The biggest news from CES will come from the start-ups. This year, it’s all about the entrepreneurs with many of the big players choosing to stay home rather than spend the money only to share the spotlight. Thanks in part to crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter, more small companies are making it to the market with truly unique gizmos like a device called Game Skunk that adds smells to video game play.

What will CES 2013 bring? Lots of new ideas, some of which are going to influence the way you reach your customer in the coming years, so stay tuned.
