What Are You Going To Do With Your 2,000 Hours?

By my estimation, the average employee will spend approximately 2,000 hours at work this year.

That seems like a long time to some people, whilst for many others it won’t be enough time to complete all of their work.

Whether or not you’re daunted or excited about these 2,000 hours is a strong indicator as to whether or not you’re in the right job.

Either way, work makes up such a big chunk of our lives that it would be a shame to waste it being unhappy, unproductive or ill-suited for your job.

So let me ask you, what are you going to do with your 2,000 hours?

Are you going to spend it looking at the clock, counting down the minutes until your shift is over or will you be doing such compelling work that the time flies?

Are you going to allow your natural skills and abilities to wither on the tree because you’re not using them or will you be consistently operating in your areas of strength?

Are you going to try to hide with the rest of the herd or will you stand up and make your unique contribution?

Are you going to replicate the previous year like a hamster on a wheel or will you continue to grow and develop your skills for the years ahead?

Are people going to be glad that you’ve left the room or will they be delighted that you’ve entered it?

Are you going to trudge home and complain about your day or will you be talking excitedly about the amazing work that you’re doing?

Are you going to be self-absorbed and jealous of the success of others or will you be looking for opportunities to inspire, encourage and empower those around you?

Are you going to blame your boss, the economy, industry trends, your family or other external factors for your work situation or will you take responsibility for your career?

Are you going to find ways to exert the minimum amount of energy or will you maximise your performance?

Are you going to waste your time doing something of little value or will you do your best to make the world a better place?

And in the immortal words of Vince Lombardi, will you be fired with enthusiasm or will you be fired with enthusiasm?
