There’s A New Mobile OS in Town: Firefox

Thought it was enough to have iOS and Android mobile platform concerns while still knowing that BlackBerry is still lurking about?

Well, now you can check out a developers version of the new Firefox mobile OS.

Firefox OS

From the Mozilla announcement

Firefox OS is a new mobile operating system built entirely using open web standards. In Firefox OS, HTML5 apps can do “phone things” – they can make the phone vibrate, make a phone call or send a text message.

This week we are announcing our new Firefox OS developer preview phones because we believe that developers will help bring the power of the web to mobile. These developer phones are being developed by Geeksphone in partnership with Telefonica and Geeksphone.

Of course, the likelihood of this platform becoming any more than a fringe player is slim. I just caught a piece on CNBC this morning about BlackBerry and one analyst hoping that RIM sticks around so there are three options in the marketplace rather than the two dominant players. Can Firefox be another?

Mozilla thinks so and here’s the main reasons why developers should be interested.

Keep the web open. Support the open web and help make sure the power of the web is available to everyone – even on mobile devices.

Simplicity. Develop on a single technology stack (HTML5/CSS/JavaScript/new WebAPIs) and deliver across the web and devices.

Freedom. You’re not locked in to a vendor-controlled ecosystem. You can distribute your app through the Firefox Marketplace, your own website, or any other store based on Mozilla’s open app store technology.

So as a marketer can you imagine more platforms to be managing for your mobile efforts? Are you interested in a Firefox mobile OS?
