Pandora let’s you listen to customized music channels from a variety of internet connected devices so you can have a wide selection of music on hand at all times. Since music is such an important part of the holiday season, they conducted a special survey to see how Americans feel about the wintery wonders of Nat King Cole, Mariah Carey and Mannheim Steamroller.
We begin the northeast corner of the United States where 52% of the people care more about the music than the food at a holiday party. Keep that in mind before you splurge on gourmet treats for your next gathering.
The midwesterners are the earliest adopters of holiday music on Pandora and I’m not surprised. It’s so cold and snowy up there, they get in the holiday spirit while the rest of us are packing up the bathing suits and buying back-to-school clothes.
In the south, 80% of people said they prefer classic holiday songs to new releases. They’re very sentimental in the south. Out here on the west coast, 31% said they prefer to listen to new holiday tunes. Personally, I’m going for the mix. I do love “All I Want for Christmas is You,” but nothing beats Bing Crosby crooning “White Christmas.”
And even though it seems like there are less than 50 Christmas songs in the world, Pandora still runs 22 different holiday stations including R&B and Pop Holidays Radio, Navidad Mexicana, Rockin’ Holidays, and Swingin’ Christmas. So far, listeners have played more than 2 billion holiday tracks in the last month and a half.
What do people like to do while listening to holiday music? They bake (46%), trim the tree (49%), wrap gifts (48%) and shop (45%).
Pandora’s highest holiday listening rates go to the 35 – 44 year olds. Slightly more women then men tune in over the holidays but twice as many men said the right music will make or break a party.
People with children listen to more holiday music than those without kids (94% vs 85%) and music is more important in households with teens.
When it comes to top stations Mariah Carey and Michael Buble take the 2nd and 3rd place on the Pandora charts, followed by classical and then country Christmas music. In the number one slot? Plain old Christmas radio which offers a little bit of everything.
All of this proves that as Grinchy as some of us act around the holidays, traditions and fuzzy feelings are still very important, so be sure to keep the mood merry and bright as we wrap up these final shopping days until Christmas.
