In a distant year, 2000, Rice Studios created and released Open Source Mambo CMS, and next year the team has released two versions, distributed in two licenses that fall under the GNU GPL and this project got the name Mambo Open Source. Year after year, developers continued to innovate and create new versions Mambo, until on September 16, 2005 – the first version of Joomla was released. At this moment, the team of independent developers stepped away from Mambo project and started developing the new CMS – Joomla. Because of differences in company policies, the Rice Studios took complete control over Mambo Open Source.
The development team united in an organization called Open Source Matters and their project is 100% open source and GPL-license.

On the early stages, their Joomla 1.0 was more like a previous project – is was Mambo CMS but with major corrections. Mambo and Joomla – continued carried on their ways, both of them were made on the basis of Mambo 4.5.2.
In 2006 Joomla was recognized as the best Free Content Management Systems.
In October 2006, there came off the new version of Joomla 1.5 [BETA]. 1.5 was very different from the Mambo and Joomla 1.0. The new version presented new features and lots of new classes, as well as it implemented the full framework. From this point for some of the components system required to turn on the Legacy Mode.
By the end of 2008 the number of daily downloads of Joomla hits the top.
January 10th – Joomla 1.6 officially announced. The new version of Joomla! was way more powerful and easier to use than ever before. The kernel was completely rewritten making the new Joomla! version fits both: a small website or web application and a huge enterprise portal. Due to a combination of power and ease of use Joomla! 1.6 CMS successfully maintains leading positions among a number of other CMS’s.
What Happened Next?
Joomla 1.7 was released on July 19, 2011, six months after 1.6.0. This version adds enhanced security and improved migration tools.
Joomla 2.5 was released on January 24, 2012, six months after 1.7.0. This version is a long term support (LTS) release. Originally this release was to be 1.8.0, however the developers announced August 9 that they would rename it to fit into a new version number scheme in which every LTS release is an X.5 release. This version was the first to run on other databases besides MySQL.
Joomla 3.0 was released on September 27, 2012. Originally, it was supposed to be released in July 2012; however, the January/July release schedule was uncomfortable for volunteers, and the schedule was changed to September/March releases.
