Google Maps App for iOS Released

Tired of being taken to desert locations in Australia when all you wanted to do was visit a nice little town?

Scared that your use of Apple Maps will bring to the Google Plex when you really wanted to go to Apple’s HQ (there is absolutely no record of that happening but it would be very funny, wouldn’t it?).

Well fear no more because the Google Maps app for iOS is in the App Store. Think we are misguiding you? Take a look!

The introduction in the App Store description reads

Navigate your world with Google Maps, now available for iPhone. Get comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-use maps with built-in Google local search, voice guided turn-by-turn navigation, public transit directions, Street View and more. Use Google Maps to discover great places to eat, drink, shop and play, with ratings and reviews from people you trust. Sign in to save your favorite places and quickly access all your past searches and directions from your computer, right on your phone.

I put the emphasis on the word accurate but don’t you think Googlers everywhere chuckle a bit when they read about Apple Map follies?

Now if you held out on upgrading to iOS 6 due to the lack of a native Google Maps app your rebellion can end. Heck, you can even think that your hold out was the main reason why Apple finally approved the Google Maps app if it makes you feel important.

In the end, this is likely to put Google in an even stronger position in the map world. Apple screwed up with their maps effort to the point that CEO Tim Cook apologized for the product and suggested competitors for iPhone 5 and iOS 6 users to use until Apple got its stuff together.

We’ll keep an eye on how many Google Maps apps downloads occur and how quickly. I suspect the numbers will be quite interesting to everyone. Will there be joy in Mountain View and a heavy sigh from Cupertino?

What’s your take?

Note: As of 12:02 AM EST I can’t find the app in the App Store. What about you?
