Add some swag to your narration: Making Subtitles on Adobe Premiere Pro CS6

I recently had to make a commercial and the editing program I used was Adobe Premiere. One large part of my commercial was narration  and after editing I realized his voice in the background was cool, but subtitles would make the project even better.

So here is a simple way to add subtitles to a video.

Step 1: Getting started

When Adobe Premiere is open go to Title –> New Title –> Default Still

* Note that you can pick default roll or crawl, but to have your subtitle still the default still is the best option.*

Step 2: Name your title

Step 3

Now it is time to write!

Click the grey box and begin to type.

You’ll notice the different styles below and the effects on the right hand side.

Step 4: Helpful effects

Aspect: On the right hand side you will see the word aspect. This tool will stretch and shrink your text.  To make your text become stretched far to the right, increase the number for aspect. To make your text scrunched up to the left, decrease the number for aspect.

Low aspect:

Leading: This tool is useful when you have two lines of text (one on top of the other). As you increase the number for leading the lines become farther apart and as you decrease the number they become closer to each other.

Font Family & Font Style: This changes the style and family of the font.  I used Apple Chancery for the font family and Bold for the font style.

Font size: This controls how big or small your font is.

Centering: On the left hand corner there is a box that says center. To center your text click both of the boxes to center your text horizontally and vertically.

Step 5: Add your subtitle to your  video

A.) Close out the title box. Don’t worry it is automatically saved.

B.) You should see the name you saved your subtitle as in the column on the left hand side.

C.) Drag and drop your subtitle on top of your video, not overlapping your video but a line above it. When you play it you will see that it shows up.

D.) If you ever need to edit it, double click on it in your working space and you can edit it some more.

Congrats, you have made you’re first subtitle!
